Bridges to the World

It's hard to imagine that anything has improved in the Lawley Township since the days when Mahatma Gandhi made it his home.

On this day, though, we hoped to assist at least 12 families with a week's worth of supplies, as well as to be increase our understanding of the problems faced by those whose abject poverty restricts their chances of making a better life for themselves and their families.

Cora introducing GDCU travelers to members of the Lawley Community Health Workers. This is Fequila. She's the leader of the Community Health Workers in Lawley. Without Fequila & the CHW's, the people of Lawley would have little assistance.

CHW's sort the groceries into 12 piles for the families they have decided need assistance most.

Everyone gathers around the supplies as the workers begin to sing.

Song and dance are often the only things they have to show their thanks for assistance. Today is no different, as the workers sing and dance. They even wrote a song specifically to sing to us.

This is Alice, a Community Health volunteer in Lawley. She's had AIDS since 1985. She says that she was on the verge of suicide when Cora convinced her that her life had meaning and purpose.

This little boy just "showed up" one day - so Alice took him in. Government rules require that his status be evaluated after 6 months, after which time Alice may be awarded guardianship of him - as Alice puts it - forever. Alice says "I may have AIDS, but I have so much love to give".
